Lamu

The energy of this remote Swahili island on Kenya’s northeastern coast is pure magic. From endless, untouched beaches, roaming donkeys, wooden sailboats, the most charming architecture, to the winding streets of its historic old town, Lamu is one of our favorite places and we naturally want to share it with our favorite people!

If Shela displays a curated, contemporary edge and is predominantly a beach town, Lamu Town has the raw appeal of centuries-old traditions.

Both towns are muslim and to respect the locals we advise to throw on a Kikoy (in your gift basket) on top of your dresses, to cover up.

Lamu Town is an absolute must-see and you are really missing out if you don’t go there at least once.

We will make sure some fishermen boats and guides will be in front of Peponis on Friday between 9:30am-11am.

It’s best to go in the morning, as it otherwise gets too hot.

Things to explore in Lamu Town:

  • Basket market behind the main square

  • Baraka Gallery

  • Lamu Fort

  • Lamu Market (early morning)

  • Swahili House

  • Donkey Sanctuary

  • Lamu Museum

  • Have a break at Lamu House

There is loads to do in Shela:

Swim the channel, wakeboard, waterski, kite surf, snorkel, kayak, go creek floating, bird watching, or just drink Rosé..
